Curio Book Box Workshop:  SUNDAY, APRIL 16th, 1-4pm eastern standard time

Participants provide their own book for this workshop*

In this workshop, I'll take students through the complete transformation of a basic book to a fully constructed box, while maintaining the book’s structure but creating a secret space.

You'll learn how to gut a book and build a box, as well as going through the elements of collage, pertaining to specific dimensions, engineering 3-d elements to include and building in secret messages. The ultimate resulting piece of work can be a curiosity box that holds one’s treasures, or can stand alone as a piece of artwork. The rules in creating this work can be learned and broken within the time of building, so there are many opportunities to explore.

It's always a good idea to think about what this Curio Book Box might be for... will it keep your trinkets and treasures to be passed on? will it hold your love letters? maybe it’s a gift for a special someone?

NOTE *Books that are at least an inch & 1/2 in width are best. Bigger is okay, smaller is more difficult: Novels, cookbooks, a vintage book, they'll all be great!

Materials for collage and construction will be provided for this workshop

To bring to the table during this workshop:

hot glue/ glue gun

xacto knife or box kutter

pencil

scissors

hole punch

washi tape

elmers glue

old magazine

wood or metal ruler

Everyone is encouraged to bring personal items to make their book box exclusively unique. Items can be flat or 3-d, including: old family photos, pages from an old notebook, vintage rulers, fabric from your great-grandmother’s wedding dress, flatware, tiny frames or little eyeglasses, the ideas are endless...
